A few minutes drive out of Grand Junction Colorado is the Colorado National Monument. This landscape is not unlike Bryce Canyon Utah, with its red rocks eroded into strange and eerie sculptures. The temperature is about the same too – 95+ degrees, yikes! Nevertheless, we parked our car at the top of the Serpent’s Trail and walked down its more than 50 switchbacks! Along the way we saw rock formations that looked like a Dairy Queen ice cream cone, the Star Ship Enterprise, and a character from a Dr. Suess book. At the bottom of the trail, we picked up another trail leading to Devil’s Kitchen, we just had to see what the devil keeps in his kitchen! He keeps rocks… Really enormous red rock formations, all clustered together with an opening in the center, which gives the place a kitchen-like feel. I guess if the devil is 50 feet tall, this might work for a kitchen. For us, it was a nice place to eat lunch in the shade before hiking back UP the serpent. Enjoy! |
