French Toast
Preparation Time: 5 minutes
Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Flavor: French
Serves: 4 (can be scaled)
Condiments: Butter, syrup and fresh fruit
4 eggs
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
8 slices day-old bread
Butter or margarine

In a bowl, beat together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla (if used), and nutmeg (if used). Place bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet. Pour egg mixture over bread and let stand for a few minutes. Turn slices over and let stand until all egg mixture is absorbed.

Melt butter on a griddle or in a frying pan over medium heat. Add a few bread slices at a time and cook until browned; turn and brown other side. Place cooked toast on a serving plate and keep warm in a 150* oven. (If you preheat oven to 150*, then turn it off, oven will retain enough heat to keep your toast warm without overbaking.) Repeat with remaining slices.

SERVE with syrup and fresh fruit.

Cook's Notes
We use sour dough bread sliced about 3/4 inch thick. The texture is more firm and the flavor has a greater depth. Yummy!
